Brand New Season Underway (Aug. 24th, 2016)
The 2016 season has begun and once again the Papermakers will be fielding three strong teams at the Freshmen, JV and Varsity levels. There are a total of 42 boys and 6 coaches who are all eager to learn and compete. Of those 42, 13 are freshmen. The Varsity team did say goodbye to 8 seniors from last Fall, but there is a good mix of young and experienced as they push for their first FVA title since 2007.
True Team Effort (Nov. 4th, 2015)
The season was full of ups and downs, however, the boys never threw in the towel. Despite at one point losing their top player and being down 5 seniors, the next kid off the bench stepped in and contributed at a high level. The season ended last night in a loss to #1 Kaukauna. The coaching staff couldn't be more proud of the resiliency of this group. It was an extremely fun season and very difficult one. The Papermakers may have been dealt the toughest schedule in the state with their gruesome tournament schedule and how strong the FVA was this season. They finished with an 18-12 match record and tied for 3rd in the best conference in the state. We will miss our seniors: Zak, Josh, Peyton, Zach, Nate, Brett, Ryan and Steve. They have meant so much to our program and we thank them for all they have given to our school and community.
Season Filled With Adversity (Oct.. 26th, 2015)
The 20-15 season is in its final week of conference play. Playoffs begin this Friday night and the Papermakers (#4) will host #5 Appleton East. The two match up on Tuesday night in the final FVA match as well. On paper, it is clear that Kimberly is limping into the postseason. Four seniors are injured and did not complete the final tournament last Saturday in Homestead. While it is tough to see so many seniors not able to compete in their final season, the other players have stepped up there game. This was evident with some solid play on Saturday when they split with #6 state-ranked Wauwatosa East and played #2 Appleton North very tough last Tuesday night.
The JV and Freshmen team has been quite the opposite on the injury front. They have remained very healthy and the improvements have shown. At the 16th Annual JV Invite in mid-October, both teams made it to the Gold Bracket (final 8) and played quality volleyball. The Freshmen lost in close sets to Fond du Lac's JV squad and then our JV lost in the Championship to Kaukauna. Both teams also made it to the final 4 of the Green Bay Notre Dame JV Invite in early October with our JV winning the Championship over Fondy.
Tough Schedule to Start (Sept. 20th, 2015)
The schedule at the beginning of this season has not been easy. The Varsity team has already played 7 ranked opponents in the coaches top 10 poll in just 3 short weeks. The boys have been learning a lot about themselves and it will definitely help us later in the season. The team really has shown what they are at the 2-day FVA Conference Tournament. Friday night, held at Kimberly High, the team revenged an earlier in the season loss to Appleton West with a big 3-set victory. Despite falling to the top team in the state, Kaukauna, they went 4-0 on day 2 at Appleton North with all 16 boys contributing.
The Freshmen and JV teams' schedules weren't any easier. They have competed tough and continue to improve. A couple of highlights have included their resiliency. For example, the JV team lost big to Appleton North at a triangular, but then came back and had an impressive win over Kaukauna (who had just beaten North). Similarly, the Freshmen lost big to Kaukauna in set 1 on Friday night, however, came back and won set 2. All three levels will continue to play more consistent and most importantly, continue to grow as a team.
2015 Season Underway (August 31, 2015)
The slogan this year is "We, Not Me." It's pretty self-explanatory, there is not one person bigger than the team or the program. We will win and lose as a team. The boys are working hard and the first week just finished with a solid scrimmage vs. Appleton West. This year, we are boasting 3 teams again, however, we now have a Freshmen-only squad. We had 17 freshmen tryout this year and that made 41 total ... the most ever!! The Varsity squad is eager to prove themselves after losing 8 seniors. The first match is this coming Tuesday vs Neenah and then the Varsity travels to Kettle Moraine, a top-tier tournament, next Saturday. It will be important that all players continue to push themselves and try to get better day-in and day-out. Head Coach Matt Seidl explains, "We are inexperienced compared to years past, but these guys will compete with any team. We need to continue to focus on the fundamentals and take care of business in the big moments ... that'll hopefully allow us to take the next step as a program."
Strong Play At All Levels posted Oct 31, 2014
Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads have made a very strong second have run in both conference play and tournaments. The Varsity team only lost 2 best-of-five conference dual matches to #3 ranked Kaukauna and #5 state-ranked Appleton North. The North match was televised on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel around the state. The team finished 3rd place in the FVA. They competed strong at their tournaments, specifically finishing tied for 5th at the 18-team Homestead event. They fell to #1 state ranked Brookfield East 20-21 in the second set (cap of 21).
The JV team won the Fondy JV Invite in early October by sweeping through Appleton North, Kaukauna, and Fondy! It was an amazing day for the Red team winning the event for the first time. The JV White team finished at a respective 9th position and almost beat Appleton North. The JV teams finished their season this week in the FVA Quad by losing a thrilling 13-15 3rd set to Appleton North. Their final set record was a stellar 56-23 and a match record of 23-6-1. Congrats to coaches Ben Nabbefeld and Alex Peterson on a fine season, finishing in 2nd place in the FVA.
The Varsity starts playoffs Friday night at home vs #6 seed Green Bay United (Kimberly is #3 seed). The winner will most likely play at Appleton North (#2 seed) on Tuesday night. Go Makers!
Outstanding First Month for All Levels posted Sep 29, 2014
The Kimberly Boys Volleyball program had a fantastic month of September once again here in 2014. Despite falling in an extremely competitive 5-set match to top-ranked Kaukauna, the Varsity team has continued to impress. With an overall set record of 27-12, the team has started to get votes for the top 10 in the state by coaches. In the first day of the conference tournament at Appleton North, the boys took care of business and finished the day 4-0 to pick up four points to stay within striking distance of Appleton North & Kaukauna in the FVA Conference race. "It was crucial for our boys to bounce back against a tough 14-16 fifth set loss to Kaukauna and they did just that." Explained Head Coach Matt Seidl. "They won all four matches in Appleton and then made it to the final four at a grueling 16-team Dave Hash Invite before falling to Marquette. I couldn't be happier with the progress this team is making."
The JV team also made it to the final four of the Dave Hash JV Invite and lost a close 3-set match with Marquette. Both JV & Varsity took down a strong Appleton West in straight sets during the week as well. The boys are working very hard and it is really paying off.
Exciting Start to Season, All In! posted Sep 10, 2014
The first couple weeks of the 2014 season has been jam packed with excitement. It all started with tryouts and the most boys ever wanting to play boys volleyball in Kimberly. We ended up with 17 JV players, 15 Varsity players, and two managers. Along with four coaches, this should be an exciting year. The team motto this year is "All In." Every player in the program understands the meaning behind these two short words (including our parents after the parent meeting the first week of the season). Expectations are high once again and we wouldn't want it any other way.
Last week, with no matches on the schedule, both teams competed in two scrimmages. Kaukauna & Green Bay Notre Dame traveled to Kimberly for a friendly practice. This was essential for our young kids to get some game-like experience before our first match.
Last night, it was the first match of the season at Green Bay West High School. Both our JV & V won their matches to start the season out strong against newly formed Green Bay United. There were lots of jitters early on, but it was nice to see all the young boys get their feet under them and just start playing volleyball as the night went on.
The Varsity squad heads off to the biggest tournament in the state this Saturday for the 32-team Racine Invite. The competition will be tough and it will be a great test for our program. Which will be very important since we play one of the best programs in the state next Tuesday at home vs. Kaukauna. It is Youth Night and we are looking forward to seeing a bunch of future Kimberly boys volleyball players in attendance.
Summer Nearing End, 2014 Campaign Underway posted Aug 6, 2014
The Summer has been packed with tons of volleyball for the Kimberly Boys Volleyball program. There were camps, contact days, open gyms, summer leagues, weight lifting, agility training, and tons of hard work. We are now just a couple weeks away from tryouts on August 25th and the coaching staff & boys are set to get started.
This Fall season is no different than years past as expectations are extremely high. The Varsity squad returns 11 out of 15 players from last season and many with quite a bit of experience. The JV team will once again be divided into two (Red & White) to compete at multiple matches & tournaments. This has worked out very well in the past as it gives everyone more playing time and is continuing to grow the sport.
First-year head coach Matt Seidl gives his thoughts, "I cannot wait to get started. There are a lot of familiar faces on our Varsity team and I strongly believe we will be near the top in ball control and serve-receive. We also have quite a bit of competition at multiple positions and they is only going to bring out the best in everybody." Seidl continues with the JV teams, "Our numbers continue to remain high, which is no surprise since our Middle School League in the off-season boasted the biggest numbers ever with 5 teams. I'm excited to see the progression of these boys throughout the season."
As announced earlier this year, Ted Vanden Wygaard returns, previously co-head coach, as an assistant at the Varsity level. Junior Varsity Head Coach Ben Nabbefeld is also happy to welcome a new assistant in Alex Peterson. All four coaches on the staff are Kimberly Boys Volleyball alumni.
The program has two scrimmages the week of September 1st before their first match @ Green Bay United (Preble, East, West, Southwest combined) on September 9th at 5:30pm. Check out the full schedule by clicking on the "Schedule & Results" tab.
New Coaches, Familiar Faces posted Feb 7, 2014
Head Coach Chris Seidl announced his resignation from the Kimberly Boys volleyball program last month. Chris thoroughly enjoyed running the program for two years, prior to that he was head of the junior varsity team for three seasons. In addition to that, he was a four year starter for the Papermakers and helped lead them to two FVA Conference Championships in '06 & '07. I think it is safe to say Chris will be missed. The program did not have to look too far for his replacement, however, in his brother Matt Seidl. Last season, Matt was the assistant varsity coach and is eager to take the next step in running his own program. He has coached for 6 years with Wisconsin Volleyball Academy in the Nightmares program where he has coached boys from ages 14-18 years-old while also having a two year stint as assistant coach in Neenah in 2010-11. Matt is a USAV Cap I certified coach and a licensed WIAA Volleyball Official and PAVO/NCAA certified line judge. Assisting Matt with the varsity squad in 2014 will be Ted Vanden Wyngaard ('06). Ted was co-head coach for Kimberly from 2009-2011. He was also junior varsity coach in 2008. In the meantime, he also has coached for Wisconsin Volleyball Academy for a number of years. The 'Makers are lucky to have Ted back on the sideline and look forward to his help in maintaining the strong tradition that is Kimberly Boys Volleyball. Coach Ben Nabbefeld will return for his 3rd season as head junior varsity coach. He welcomes an assistant this year, Alex Peterson. Alex played for the Papermakers from 2008-2012 as a libero and defensive specialist. He started his coaching career this winter with WVA, coaching under Tom Larson. "I could not be more excited about the upcoming season," Head Coach Matt Seidl explains, "I'm excited for the opportunity and know the program is going to remain one of the best in the state with the help of my three assistants. All of us are graduates of the boys program here in Kimberly and that passion will show throughout the process."
2013 Campaign Concludes, Strong Tradition Continues posted Nov 6, 2013
Four players put on the Red & White for the last time on Tuesday night in the Sectional Semi-Final in Kaukauna. Despite the loss to the number one seed, the team should not be disappointed about how they represented their school and the boy's program. Aaron, Jonah, Stephen, and Hunter have been a crucial part of the continual success the program has seen the last four years. Coach Chris Seidl explains, "While we were outplayed tonight and didn't play our best, I will not be quick to forget these four seniors. I've coached all of them since they started playing volleyball and I couldn't be prouder with their growth and success as young men and volleyball players. They will be missed." The season was full of ups and downs but the team finished as one of the top teams in the area once again with a 19-13 overall match record. The highlight of the year has to be winning the FVA Conference Tournament for the first time in program history. The Papermakers actually defeated every team in the FVA during the regular season, whether it was in conference play or in a tournament format. This had the Papermaker faithful believing heading into the postseason. "There hasn't been a team we haven't competed with around the state. We've taken down top teams in the area and in the top 10." Seidl continues, "I think we consistently proved to be a tough match-up for our opponents from Day 1, that is something to be proud of ... we competed hard." The season officially wraps up with an end of year banquet set for Sunday, November 17th at the Darboy Club.
Regular Season Ends on High Note posted Oct 22, 2013
The regular season for the Varsity team ended last night at the Kaukauna triangular which included Appleton North. The squad fell in the early matchup to Kaukauna despite winning set one decisively. The boys rebounded in match #2 and took down the defending state champion Lightning in 3 sets. Head Coach Chris Seidl was pleased, "We played two of the best teams in our conference, both who we lost to earlier in the year, and pushed them to the brink. We made a few extra plays to beat North and it definitely should be a confidence boost for our guys heading into the postseason." Both Coach Seidl & Nabbefeld also left the Kimberly High School gymnasium on Monday night very pleased. Both squads defeated Green Bay Preble/East in the Papermakers final conference match of 2013. Despite a couple injuries, the JV squad won 2-1. Varsity swept through all 3 sets 25-13, 25-15, 25-16. Coach Seidl liked how his team was on top of their game, "The season has been up and down and we've been preaching more consistent matches. That starts with serving and serve-receive ... we did both well tonight. We played relatively error-free volleyball which was nice to see." The WIAA tournament begins next Friday, November 1st. However, upcoming is the 10th Annual Kimberly Boys JV Invite to be held at the High School this Saturday, October 26th beginning at 9am. 16 teams will be participating in this year's event which includes all FVA schools, Waukesha West, Mukwonago, and Fort Atkinson. The Varsity team sits at a 18-12 current match record after its grueling 2013 regular season schedule is finished. The team has competed against 7 top 10 teams and have continued to improve. With the playoffs upon us, let's keep on eye out for the Papermakers.
Season Well Underway, Another Solid Start posted Sep 12, 2013
Both the Junior Varsity and Varsity squads swept their opening match last week in Neenah. The first game is always interesting to watch as many of the boys on the JV team have never competed in a volleyball match in their lives. Coach Ben Nabbefeld's younger group however proved to be anything other than ready to go. They won all 3 sets decisively. On Tuesday night, they also won three very close sets at Appleton West bringing their overall set record to a perfect 6-0. Coach "Nabby's" team will compete in their first tournament next weekend, September 21st in Burlington. They will be defending their title from last season. Coach Chris Seidl is also pleased with the start from his Varsity squad. They also started with two impressive victories and are 6-0 to start the 2013 season. A huge matchup awaits next Tuesday vs. state-ranked Kaukauna on our home court. But before that epic match, they will be competing at the biggest boys' tournament in the state this Saturday in Racine. A total of 32 teams will be competing and the competition will be stiff.
Summer Wrapping Up, Coaching Staff Solidified posted Jul 30, 2013
The summer certainly has flown by but there has been a lot of hard work put in by kids of the Boys Volleyball program. Many participated in work-outs three days a week, 5 contact days, FVA summer league, Middle School Camp, and open gyms. The program was excited to see that the momentum from an awesome Spring Middle School league carried over to the summer. Over 20 kids participated in the Middle School camp on July 25-26th. We look forward to seeing everyone this Fall! The coaching staff has added one coach to its staff for the 2013 season. Coach Matt Seidl will assist his brother Chris at the Varsity level. The brothers are looking forward to coaching together and continuing the great tradition that is Kimberly Boys Volleyball. Matt was a 4-year starter at Right Side for the Papermakers and also played collegiately at St. Norbert College as a Setter/Right Side. The past 5 years, he has coached for Wisconsin Volleyball Academy in Appleton, working with the boys program, the Nightmares. There, as a USAV CAP I certified coach, he helped lead his team to qualify for the USAV Jr. National Championships in 2012 & 2013 (the first time any area club team has done so). In 2012, the squad competed in Dallas while this past summer in Reno, NV and finished 14th in the nation at the 18s level. Matt's teams have also won 2 Badger Region State Titles and is proud to have coached numerous young men who went on to play in college from Division 1 to NAIA. Matt is also a certified WIAA official and PAVO/NCAA line judge. He graduated from SNC in 2011 and currently works for a financial firm in Green Bay. Coach Ben Nabbefeld and Coach Amanda Henn are also returning and hope this year will be one to never forget!
Incredible Season Comes to an End posted Nov 2, 2012
The unbelievable journey came to an end on Thursday night against rival Appleton North, but head coach Chris Seidl could not be prouder of this group. "Tonight the court was full of not only outstanding athletes, but awesome volleyball players. We've been one of the few teams in the state to give Appleton North all they can handle this season," Seidl stated. That sure was the case early on in the Sectional Final last night in Kimberly in front of a packed crowd. The Papermakers jumped out to an early 5-1 lead but the #1 state-ranked and undefeated Lightning were just too good. "Ultimately, it came down to serving and serve-receive as it normally always does and they beat us in both those categories," the head coach explained."It was one of the best atmospheres I've seen for a volleyball match in our area and we're thankful for all the support. We definitely wished we could have played better. But I am extremely proud of these guys and how hard they have worked to get to this point." The Papermakers end their 2012 campaign with a 25-8 match record (64-20 set record). It was their 6th trip to the Sectional Final and first since 2008. The team has 9 seniors and they will be missed, but one thing is for sure ... Kimberly boy's volleyball will remain strong. Their Junior Varsity team this season ended with an undefeated conference record.
